AHG16/CE5-Related: Simplifications for Cross Component Adaptive Loop Filter
Abstract
This contribution proposes complexity reduction of the Cross Component Adaptive Loop Filter (CCALF) which is a tool currently being investigated in CE 5-2.1 and CE5-2.2. The original filter shape proposed in CE 5-2.1 uses 14 multiplications for filtering of each Chroma sample. The current proposal reduces the number of multiplications to 8 for each sample and at the same time the coding gain of the original tool is mostly kept. Moreover the line buffer requirement is also reduced by 1 line when compared to the filter shape proposed in CE 5-2.1.
JVET-P0106 AHG16/CE5-Related: Simplifications for Cross Component Adaptive Loop Filter [A. M. Kotra, S. Esenlik, B. Wang, H. Gao, E. Alshina (Huawei)]
The filter shape is proposed to be modified to have only 8 coefficients. The proposed filter shape also has a claimed advantage that the line buffer is reduced by one line when compared to the original filter shape.
The results against the anchor are 0.65%, 0.66% Chroma losses on RA compared to CE5-2.1.
BoG recommendation: Test in the CE. Since the shape is highly asymmetric, a test on other chroma locations is required.
