CE6-related: Context modelling for signalling MTS index
Abstract
This contribution is related to the context modelling for signalling the index of multiple transform set (MTS). In VVC Draft 5, the quadtree depth (QTDepth) of one coding block (CB) is used to select the context variable when signalling the first bin of MTS index (tu_mts_idx). However, the QTDepth cannot always represent the CB area, because of additional usage of binary tree (BT) and ternary tree (TT) splitting. In this contribution, three methods are proposed to replace QTDepth in the context modelling of the first bin of tu_mtx_idx by CB area. The current method in VTM5.0 and method 1 use six context variables, while method 2 uses four context variables. In method 3, only one context variable is used for signalling the first bin of tu_mtx_idx. It is reported that the proposed context modelling results in AI, RA, and LB Y/Cb/Cr BD-rates as 0.00%/-0.02%/-0.01, 0.01%/-0.05%/-0.01%, and 0.03%/-0.15%/0.01% for method 1, respectively, -0.01%/-0.05%/0.01%, 0.00%/-0.05%/-0.04%, and 0.04%/0.11%/0.10% for method 2, respectively, and 0.00%/-0.04%/0.01, -0.02%/-0.06%/-0.07%, and 0.03%/0.25%/0.22% for method 3, respectively.
