Non-CE3: A unified luma intra mode list construction process
Abstract
In the current VVC WD there exists three different luma intra mode list construction process: one for zero reference line index, a second for non-zero reference line index and a third for multi-hypothesis intra. This contribution proposes the use of a single list construction process. The contribution achieves this by first signaling if a luma intra mode is angular, and for angular mode constructing lists comprising only of angular modes (which is the same as currently being used for non-zero reference line index). For non-angular luma intra mode (i.e. PLANAR, DC) an additional flag is signaled that indicates the selected mode. It is asserted that the proposed modification simplifies the luma intra mode list construction process and on average has no significant coding efficiency impact. The proposed change is implemented in VTM-3.0 and evaluated under common test conditions. Note, that the unified list construction is used only for entropy coding and the encoder mode search is the same as in VTM-3.0. The proposed modification reportedly provides an average luma BD rate performance of -0.07% (all-intra), -0.03% (random-access), 0.05% (low delay B). It is also reported that for class A1 sequences in all-intra configuration the proposed scheme provides an average BD rate of -0.29%.
