JVET-AJ0372 BoG Report: Group of ECM tools with large memory access [X. Li (BoG chair)]

This was presented Thu 7 Nov. 1515

This document contains the report of the BoG on group of tools with large memory access. The BoG met on 11/6 Wednesday 10:15am –11:35am.

Mandates

With regard to AHG7 activities, it was agreed to establish a new group of tools with large memory access, e.g by needing large lookup tables. It is however also necessary to take into account the granularity of usage, e.g. it is different if a large amount of coefficient values needs to be reloaded for every 4x4 block or for an entire CTU.

This BoG was to further work on criteria, and set up a list of tools that would be added to such a group.

Recommendations

  • Tool list
    • PDP
    • Enhanced MTS
    • LFNST extension
    • NSPT
    • Fixed filter in ALF
  • Cfg Options (For tools which extended the tools in VVC, the group off test should only turn off the extended part while leaving the VVC tool unchanged)
    • PDP control is available
    • The proponents of Enhanced MTS and LFNST extension will try to
    • The proponents NSPT and Fixed filter in ALF will implement the control
  • Summary table

Note that the lookup table sizes are counted based on the ECM-14 implementation, which has not been fully optimized for memory usage.

The tools with lookup table size larger than 64Kbytes. Note that Kbytes =1000bytes in the following discussions.

Abstract
The JVET established the VVC Test Model 2 (VTM2) software at its 3 meeting (-2 2023, ). This document serves as a source of general tutorial information on the VVC design and also provides an algorithm description and encoding method description of VTM2 software. It is noted that, as no update of the algorithm description document was released at the 27thJVET meeting, the numbering of the VTM software version is higher than that of this description document. In the main body of the text, numbering refers to the software version. The VVC has been developed by a joint collaborative team of ITU-T and ISO/IEC experts known as the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET), which is a partnership of ITU-T Study Group 16 Question 6 (known as VCEG) and ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11 (known as MPEG). This new standard has been designed with two primary goals. The first of these is to specify a video coding technology with a compression capability that is substantially beyond that of the prior generations of such standards, and the second is for this technology to be highly versatile for effective use in a broadened range of applications. In addition to the applications that have commonly been addressed by prior video coding standards, some key application areas for the use of this standard include in particular ultra-high-definition video (e.g., with 3840×2160 or 7620×4320 picture resolution and bit depth of 10 or 12 bits as specified in Rec. ITU-R BT.2100), video with a high dynamic range and wide colour gamut (e.g., with the perceptual quantization or hybrid log-gamma transfer characteristics specified in Rec. ITU-R BT.2100), and video for immersive media applications such as 360° omnidirectional video projected using a common projection format such as the equirectangular or cubemap projection format.

Decision (SW): Adopt JVET-AF0122 to the next release of VTM, turned off by default in CTC. Abstract
This document contains the draft text for changes to the versatile supplemental enhancement information messages for coded video bitstreams (VSEI) standard (Rec. ITU-T H.274 | ISO/IEC 23002-7), to specify additional SEI messages, including the shutter interval information SEI message, neural-network post-filter characteristics SEI message, neural-network post-filter activation SEI message, phase indication SEI message, and post-filter hint SEI message.

Wang] (2023-08-18) Post-meeting note: De facto primary editor for this document, the corresponding ITU consent text, and the corresponding FDIS text WG 5 N 220: Y.-K. Wang. Text related to the remaining revisit from the BoG report JVET-AE0272 was presented on Tuesday 18 July at 1035. This is related to the issue that for frame interpolation between frames A and B only one activation shall be performed for all frames that are to be interpolated altogether. It was commented that the purpose may be difficult to understand for implementers. It was suggested to add a NOTE explaining the purpose of that constraint. Decision (Ed./clarification): Adding such a note was agreed. The technical content of this was also deliver...

Abstract
This document reports on the work of the JVET ad hoc group on Project Management, including an overall status report on JVET’s standardization projects and the progress made during the interim period since the preceding meeting.
JVET-AC0001 JVET AHG report: Project management (AHG1) [J.-R. Ohm (chair), G. J. Sullivan (vice-chair)] The work of the JVET overall had proceeded well in the interim period with approximately 10% higher number of input documents (as compared to the previous meeting) submitted to the current meeting. Intense discussion had been carried out on the group email reflector, and all output documents from the preceding meeting had been produced. Output documents from the preceding meeting had been made initially available at the JVET web site (https://jvet-experts.org/) or the ITU-based JVET site (http://wftp3.itu.int/av-arch/jvet-site/2022_10_AB_Mainz/). It is noted that the previous document sites http://phenix.int-evry.fr/jvet/, http://phenix.int-evry.fr/jct/, and http://phenix.int-evry.fr/jct3v/ are still accessible, but were converted to read-only. The list of documents produced included t...
