JVET-AP0166 AHG9: On depth information extension in EOI SEI message [J. Chen, Y. Ye (Alibaba)]

The EOI SEI message was extended in TuC to support multiple object depth ranges. This contribution identifies several issues in the current design, and proposes to address them in the following aspects:

1. Instead of signalling the near value and far value for each depth range, the near value and the difference between the far value and the near value are signalled to ensure that the far value is greater than or equal to the near value.
2. Add constraints on the near value and the difference value to ensure that the depth ranges do not overlap.
3. Add the value ranges of the near value and the difference value.
4. Add text to further clarify the interpretation of each depth range according to the different values of eoi_depth_range_anchor_mode_idc.
5. Adjust the quantization parameter ranges used for each depth range to align with the semantics of eoi_pic_quant_object_flag

Agreed for item 1.

Regarding item 2, it was questioned if it was harmful if that constraint did not exist. No action on item 2.

For item 3, it was suggested that for the idc equal to 2, the upper limit of the range should be 2^16 – 1, rather than 2^16. Agreed to item 3 with that change.

For item 4, it was suggested that the proposed text doesn’t handle the special case of 0.

It was suggested that the current semantics are clear.

No action on item 4.

It was noted that the current text includes “belonging not belonging” which should just be “belonging”.

Agreed item 5, with the fix to the above issue for the new text and the similar text above it.
