AHG10: Additional random-access configuration with reduced delay
Abstract
This contribution suggests adding a hierarchical GOP configuration with length 8 for random-access to have a configuration with reduced delay compared to the current available random-access configurations (hierarchical GOP of lengths 16 and 32) for the VVC reference software. It is also suggested to update the software to support additional quantization settings for inter pictures every 16:th and every 32:th picture to mimic a larger hierarchical GOP.
JVET-AP0070 AHG10: Additional random-access configuration with reduced delay [K. Andersson (Ericsson)]

This contribution suggests adding a hierarchical GOP configuration with length 8 for random-access, to have a configuration with reduced delay compared to the current available random-access configurations (hierarchical GOP of lengths 16 and 32) for the VVC reference software. It is also suggested to update the software to support additional quantization settings for inter pictures every 16th and every 32th picture to mimic a larger hierarchical GOP.

The BD-rate impact of that, compared to CTC, using the latest VTM version 23.14:

RA Y/U/V: 7.90%*/13.08%*/13.37%* EncTime: 100%* DecTime: 100%* (to be updated)

This uses fewer reference pictures than the common size 32 GOP configuration used in CTC.

It was pointed out that having adaptive GOP size could be desirable.

Decision (SW): Include proposed configuration (without additional QP changes) into the next VTM release (non-CTC).
