AHG17: Updates of Draft Joint CfP text suggested by the AHG

Abstract
The attachment of this document reflects the recommended changes on top of JVET-AO2026_v1 (Draft Joint Call for Proposals on video compression with capability beyond VVC), as discussed during the AHG17 meeting held in Aachen, DE, 25-27 February 2026 (JVET-AO2026_v2), and during a telco meeting on 10 March 2026 (JVET-AO2026_v3). This is intended to be used as an initial version for the development of the final draft CfP during the 42nd JVET meeting, where further modifications will be needed for yellow highlighted parts.

JVET-AP0047 AHG17: Updates of Draft Joint CfP text suggested by the AHG [J.-R. Ohm, M. Wien, F. Bossen on behalf of AHG]

On Monday 27 April 1600-1800 JVET-AO2026-v3 was reviewed (chaired by M. Wien). Modifications were uploaded in JVET-AP0047.zip as JVET-AO2026-v4 (look at changemarks by M. Wien). Further discussion was conducted Tuesday 28 April during 0900-1215 (chaired by M. Wien and JRO), changes agreed documented in JVET-AO2026-v5. (note: For the changes in -v6, see notes under JVET-AP0285)

Follow-up discussion was conducted on Wednesday 29 April 1430-1630, results are documented in -v7. The main purpose of that session was about finalization of the sequence selection, as documented below.

It was agreed to replace Driving POV by TravellerSwim in SRH category (already in -v6)

The following suggestions/comments were made for HDR-PD:

  • Keep all 5 sequences in HDR-PQ, and add two new in HDR-HLG for symmetry
  • Remove Meridian
  • Remove Fashion Lady
  • Remove Sparks Welding
  • Remove Neptun Fountain

For reasons of symmetry PQ/HLG, it would be good to keep Fashion Lady, as then both categories would have two cropped 8K, and either 2 or 3 4K sequences.

Among the proposals above, consensus was reached to remove Neptun Fountain.

The following suggestions/comments were made for HDR-HLG (one sequence to be added):

  • Seawalk has best characteristics to view artifacts, but low in rate.
  • Crowdwalk may be too similar to Crowdrun in terms of content; it has medium rate, and has a significant variety of dark content, has highest dynamic range, and also appropriate to see artifacts in various.
  • Towerplants has highest rate, but the bit distribution over the picture may have large impact on the visual appearance, may not be ideal for viewing.

Towerplants is least favored generally. Among the other two, more preference was expressed for Seawalk which was finally selected.

The following suggestions/comments were made for Gaming UHD Wukong (one out of three sequences to be added):

  • Preference was expressed for Wukong2 during the Aachen meeting, and again in the current session, being most representative in terms of content.
  • In terms of characteristics for viewing, all Wukong are similar. Wukong 2 is more challenging than Wukong 1, and only slightly less than Wukong 3.

Consensus was reached to use Wukong 2.

The following suggestions/comments were made for Gaming UHD Carla (one out of three sequences to be added):

  • In terms of viewing characteristics, Carla 3 is least favored.
  • Carla 4 has more variation in the scene than Carla 5, whereas Carla 5 has more texture on the road and in the buildings, and the higher consistency/less changes may be better for evaluation, also the rendering artifacts are less than Carla 4 (note that as a side remark, opinions were expressed that in general Carla sequences are much better than the first versions, but still have rendering problems).

Consensus was reached to use Carla 5.

Camellia should be kept, representing highest quality in detail, and Sports-Iceball is excellent for viewing. Among the other three, consensus was reached to remove Vertical-Walk, as it is not optimum for detecting artifacts. On the other hand, Hobby and Vertical-Snow were preferred to be kept both, due to their different scene characteristics (text overlay in Hobby, fast moving camera in Snow). Landscape-Night is not optimum for viewing and was agreed to be removed.
