JVET-AJ0064 AHG9: Signalling of Photosensitive Content Information [S. Deshpande (Sharp)]

It is proposed to indicate in an SEI message, photosensitive content information such as strobe lights/ flashing lights in an image and sequence of images, which could cause photosensitive epilepsy/ seizures. Two alternative options are proposed.

• Option 1: It is proposed to use the text description information SEI to indicate a picture (or sequence of pictures) includes photosensitive content which exceeds guidelines in ITU-R BT 1702-3. It is proposed to use txt_descr_purpose equal to 6 in this case and then to specify details about the characteristics of the photosensitive material in the txt_descr_string[ i ] syntax element in the SEI.
• Option 2: A new SEI message to indicate photosensitive content information is proposed.

It was suggested that it would be useful to indicate 3 states: photosensitive content information present, not present, or may be present.It was remarked that it is more important to know that harmful content is absent and has been tested to confirm that rather than knowing that potentially harmful content is present. May want to have two purposes defined.

It was suggested that there be signalling of the categories defined by the referred standards.

It was questioned if free form text is useful.

Decision: Adopt Option 2 to TuC with to create a new SEI message, modified to include an indicator with 3 states of yes/maybe/no for each of the 3 identified standards, and not include text strings in this version.

Further study if additional information such as text strings or category signalling is to be added.
