Film Grain Synthesis Support
Abstract
In JVET-Q0424, it is proposed to use mandatory film grain post-processing in VVC, with the design similar to the one used in AV1. This document argues that using the same film grain post-processing as in AV1 would enable re-use of the post-processing modules between the codecs, thus improving compression efficiency on movie and TV content without additional costs for the manufacturers. The document specifies the film grain synthesis parameters needed to invoke the AV1 film grain synthesis module and explains the AV1 film grain algorithm.
