AHG16: Parallel Merge Estimation for VVC
Abstract
Merge estimation region (MER), which is part of HEVC, divides a picture into equally sized square regions and allows estimation of the costs of merging candidates of multiple CUs inside the same region in parallel. Parallel merge estimation is an encoder tool, wherein the MER size can be adjusted or completely switched off by the encoder. This contribution proposes to introduce MER in VVC. Two alternative methods have been proposed. The first method introduces a normative spatial candidate availability check similar to HEVC. In the second method an additional HMVP LUT update rule is introduced to enable usage of HMVP in parallel merge estimation.
