This contribution proposes to signal access unit delimiters (AUDs) in VVC only when it is assessed to be required in order to separate the access units. The contribution proposes to signal an aud_in_next_access_unit_present_flag codeword in the AUD NAL unit. When aud_in_next_access_unit_present_flag is equal to 1, the access unit following the current access unit in decoding order shall start with an AUD NAL unit. When aud_in_next_access_unit_present_flag is equal to 0, an AUD NAL unit may or may not be present for the access unit following the current access unit.
