Non-CE4: Merge Modes Signaling
Abstract
In the current VTM, there are five merge modes including: the regular merge mode, the merge mode with motion vector difference, the subblock-based merge mode, combined inter and intra prediction mode, and triangle partition mode. The merge mode signaling follows the order described. In this contribution, two changes are proposed. First, it’s proposed to disable triangle merge prediction mode for a CU that has width or height larger than 64. Second, it’s proposed to group the merge modes in to 3 categories: 1) subblock-based merge mode, 2) regular merge mode and merge mode with motion vector difference, 3) combined inter and intra prediction mode and triangle merge prediction mode. Then a first bin is used to indicate whether the first group is used, and if the first bin is 0, a second bin is used to decide between second group and third group. For the second and third groups, one bin is used to specify the selected mode. The Y, U, V BD-rate performance for RA and LDB under common test conditions respectively are {-0.08%, -0.12%, -0.19%} and {-0.06%, 0.09%, 0.02%}. In the high QP test, the BD-rate performance for RA and LDB are {-0.24%, -0.35%, -0.39%} and {-0.38%, -0.55%, -0.65}, respectively. For the first change only, the BD-rate performance for RA and LDB are {-0.02%, 0.00%, 0.00%} and {0.03%, 0.07%, -0.10%}, respectively. When the proposed size constrain on TPM is not applied, the Y, U, V BD-rate performances in RA and LDB common test conditions are {-0.08%, -0.14%, -0.18%} and {-0.06%, -0.01%, -0.32%}, respectively. In the high QP test, the Y, U, V BD-rate performances in RA and LDB are {-0.24%, -0.34%, -0.36%} and {-0.44%, -0.62%, -0.50%}, respectively.
