Non-CE4: On triangle merge mode
Abstract
In current VTM, the maximum number of triangle merge candidates in uni-prediction candidate list is specified as five without a control of higher-level flag. This contribution proposes to add a tile group flag to allow the maximum number of triangle merge candidates to be in the range of 2 to 5, inclusive. As the maximum number of triangle merge candidates specified as 2, it is further proposed to skip the signaling of the merge candidate index for the second triangle block, i.e., merge_triangle_idx1, because merge_triangle_idx1 must be an opposite index of the merge candidate index for the first triangle block, i.e., merge_triangle_idx0. Compared to VTM-4.0 with the number of triangle merge candidates specified as 2, the proposed signaling skip method shows -0.xx%/-0.xx%/-0.xx% YUV-BDrate with 100/100% encoder/decoder runtime for RA configuration, and -0.xx%/-0.xx%/-0.xx% YUV-BDrate with 100/100% encoder/decoder runtime for LB configuration.
