JVET-D0029 Decoder-Side Motion Vector Refinement Based on Bilateral Template Matching [X. Chen, J. An, J. Zheng (HiSilicon)]
Discussed Sunday 1530 (GJS & JRO)
A decoder-side motion vector refinement algorithm was proposed. The algorithm is based on bilateral template matching and aims to reduce the bit-rate of motion vector by refining the motion vectors at the decoder side. Compared to JEM3.0, an average bit-rate savings of 2.7% with 20% encoding time increase and 45% decoding time increase was reported under a tools-off configuration and around 0.5% BD-rate gain with 3% encoding time increase and 1% decoding time increase was reported under common test condition.
The presentation deck was requested to be uploaded.
This seemed to have a good tradeoff, with a relatively small complexity increase.
It was agreed to investigate this in an EE, also clarifying the relation with the other two decoder-side ME tools (BIO and FRUC), and identifying why it gives additional gain (or what is missing in the other two). Finding a harmonized solution was requested.
