CE4: CE4-1.7, CE4-1.8: GEO and TPM Blending Off for SCC
Abstract
It is proposed in the 15th Gothenburg JVET meeting that the TPM blending operation is over-smoothing when the content is known to include sharp edges, hence rendering TPM less useful for screen content application. GEO is proposed as an extension of TPM, which also contains the over smoothing issues. In CE4-1.7 and CE4-1.8, TPM blending off and GEO + TPM blending off is tested. For TGM class, the simulation results of CE4-1.7 demonstrate 0.73% and 0.94% luma BD-rate reduction for RA and LDB configurations respectively. For CE4-1.8, 2.38% and 3.11% luma BD-rate reduction for RA and LDB configurations respectively. It is asserted that the blending off operation visibly improves prediction by avoiding over smoothing.
