JVET-AP0124 Further evaluation of Ali266 for real-time VVC encoding on smartphones [L. Wang, J. Li, J. Liang, K. Xie, S. Fang, X. Zhao, J. Chen, Y. Ye (Alibaba)]
This contribution presents results of further evaluation of the Ali266 software encoder for real-time Versatile Video Coding (VVC) encoding on smartphones. Building upon the results reported in JVET-AO0221, this work extends the assessment to encompass additional test scenarios and devices. We report the rate-distortion performance and encoding speed of Ali266 on the Xiaomi 17 smartphone using five Class B 1080p sequences from the JVET Common Test Conditions (CTC). Furthermore, we evaluate its performance on User-Generated Content (UGC) sequences captured from real-world short-video applications, tested on both the Xiaomi 17 and the Xiaomi 14 Pro. The results demonstrate that Ali266 achieves significant BD-rate improvements over the on-device HEVC hardware encoders while sustaining real-time encoding speeds across diverse mobile platforms and content types. Additionally, we provide a live demonstration of on-device real-time VVC encoding and decoding using a dual-smartphone setup including the Xiaomi 14 Pro.
BD rate gain compared to HEVC hardware encoder is >50%. 1080p RT encoding >60 fps possible in almost all cases on the newer model, >50 fps on the older one.
Power consumption was not measured, but may be less relevant for encoding.
Compared to VTM, compression performance is >25% worse.
JVET-AP0214 i266 decoder: Towards global VVC deployment on mobile devices [J. R. Arumugam, J. N. Shingala, M. B. Muthukrishnan (Ittiam)]
This informative contribution provides the performance results of i266 decoder. This software decoder is developed from scratch and optimized for ARMv8.x architectures to decode 8bit 4:2:0 VVC compliant bitstreams. The i266 software decoder is specifically designed for power efficient real time playback on a broad spectrum of mobile devices to assist mass market VVC adoption. Current performance shows 1080p60 real-time playback using single core for current generation flagship mobile devices and 720p30/60 real-time playback using 1 or 2 cores on 5-year-old budget friendly mobile devices. Comparative performance against vvdec shows that the i266 decoder is faster by roughly 30 to 50% for 1080p on client devices.
