JVET-AN0271 Software optimization and complexity reduction of ECM [Y.-J. Chang, C.-C. Chen, M. Coban, K. Cui, P. Garus, N. Hu, M. Karczewicz, P.-H. Lin, X. Meng, B. Ray, V. Seregin, Y. Shao, G. Verba, H. Wang, E. Ye, R. Yu, Y. Zhang, Z. Zhang, W. Zhu (Qualcomm) [late]

This contribution presents a reimplemented software based on ECM-18.0 and VTM-23.8. The software was optimized for speed and trade-offs between compression efficiency and runtime were improved.

Simulation results in RA configuration under CTC and CFE test conditions are summarized as follows.

CTC: -23.38% (Y), -24.17% (U), -26.92% (V); 681.1% (EncT), 742.1% (DecT),

CFE: -20.52% (Y), -33.15% (U), -38.72% (V); 1238.3% (EncT), 830.9% (DecT),

(Though this is not the software used in JVET-AN0085, it was commented by the proponent and a non-proponent that this contribution is more relevant for discussion within the context of CfE, together with contributions in section 4.16.2)

It was announced that the software could be made available – this should be done as a branch (with contribution number) of AHG12 software.

Macros to disable certain tools were also included in the software, as well as high-level flags.

Same config file as ECM is used.

Bitstream compatibility with ECM is not given.
