JVET-AN0053 AHG4/AHG15/AHG17: 4K gaming sequences featuring “Black Myth: Wukong” [J. Sauer, Y. Zhao, Y. Sun, J. Zhou, E. Alshina (Huawei)]
In this proposal, five 4K 60fps gaming sequences of the AAA game “Black Myth: Wukong” are described and contributed to JVET. This game has been released mid 2024 and the contributors suggested it is a good example of current leading-edge gaming content. The contributors encouraged study of these sequence in the context of gaming content compression in AHG15, and recommended them as candidate test sequences in developing new-generation video coding standard.
Compression ECM17 over VTM 9.0% for AI, 16.0%.
It was commented that these sequences have been produced by much more recent gaming engines than the current test material. It was also commented that when participating in real games, usually some graphics content would be overlayed which is not the case in those sequences.
Sequences might also be downsampled to HD if needed.

A viewing session should be organized for Friday afternoon.
Follow-up on Sunday 12 Oct. 0930, after viewing had been conducted – comments made during viewing:
- Gaming sequences were generally well received, being different in characteristics
- Wukong1 was most preferred by various experts
- Wukong2 and Wukong4 were also mentioned to be interesting
- Wukong5 was least preferred
- No comments were made on Wukong3, Mathias thinks it may be a bit more difficult to watch
- Challenging in terms of rate: Wukong4, Wukong1, Wukong3, Wukong2, Wukong5 is significantly less challenging
It was concluded that encoding (VTM and ECM) should be conducted on all of them, UHD and HD (subsampled) both in LDB (ECM only for HD at this moment). Baolei Yard might also be considered (the only UHD in gaming CTC). It was suggested to consider about the correct chroma location when doing downscaling.
It was commented that proposals for new test materials should be submitted early enough to be considered in interim AHG17 meeting(s). This should include information about VTM performance with QP steps of 2 in the QP range between 26 and 50. The test coordinator should be consulted to clarify upload and other aspects.
