AHG 12: Longer motion compensation interpolation filter
Abstract
In ECM-13.0, the motion compensation (MC) interpolation filter used for generating luma prediction samples is 12-tap. In this contribution, two additional longer (16-tap) MC interpolation filters are proposed for the luma prediction sample generation. When a current block satisfies a certain criterion, one of the proposed longer MC interpolation filters is activated for generating prediction sample of the current block. Otherwise, the current 12-tap interpolation filter is used. One example of such a criterion is whether the current block is a bi-predictive block. The proposed modification is reported to be implemented on top of ECM-13.0. The BD-rate PSNR impact is reported to be -0.01% for Class B and -0.31% for Class C under RA, -0.28% for Class C and -0.05% for Class E under LDB common test configurations.
