Crosscheck of JVET-S0072 (AHG9: On PDPC and reference sample filtering of non-420 sequences)
Abstract
This document reports the results of crosschecking JVET-S0072 proposed by Alibaba. In VVC Draft 9, PDPC and reference sample filtering process are very efficient coding tools for capturing the characteristic of natural camera captured content. However, it is observed that PDPC and reference sample filtering process may produce visual artifacts for screen content sequences. JVET-S0072 proposes to add an SPS-level flag to allow encoder flexibility to disable PDPC and reference sample filtering process for screen content (such as text, graphics, and computer screen). The verification tasks were partially done, and the available BD-rate results match those in JVET- S0072.
