Interaction between dual tree and minimum CU size
Abstract
In VVC Draft 6, qtbtt_dual_tree_intra_flag equal to 1 and MinCbSizeY equal to 128 can occur at the same time. When this occurs, a 128x128-luma/2x64x64-chroma coding tree unit (CTU) will be partitioned to four 64x64-luma/2x32x32-chroma child nodes with inferred quadtree (QT) split, which is contradictory to the MinCbSizeY setting. Three methods are proposed to solve this issue. In the Method 1, qtbtt_dual_tree_intra_flag is inferred to be 0 in the sequence parameter set (SPS) when MinCbSizeY is 128. In Method 2, qtbtt_dual_tree_intra_flag is signalled, but the dual tree is not applied when MinCbSizeY is 128. In Method 3, when qtbtt_dual_tree_intra_flag is 1, MinCbSizeY shall not be larger than 64.
