JVET-P0329 CE3-related: Simplification of Planar intra prediction [B. Wang, S. Esenlik, A. M. Kotra, H. Gao, E. Alshina (Huawei)]
In VVC draft Specification, a clipping operation is applied for the width and height in intra planar prediction. It is asserted that the clipping operation is not necessary and can be removed. Compared to VTM6.0, Simulation results show negligible coding performance change, with 0.01% and 0.00% for all intra and random access configuration, respectively.
The proposal suggests one editorial change that removes nW = Max(nTbW,2) from the spec, which is not needed because width 1 partitions were removed last meeting (ISP simplification).
The second suggestion is to also remove the nH = Max(nTbH,2) from the spec, which has the effect that planar is applied only one-dimensionally in case the block height is one.
It was commented by a software coordinator and editor that it is interesting to have this simplification.
The BoG recommended adoption of this simplification.
