Non-CE4: Merge mode signalling overhead reduction
Abstract
This contribution presents a method to reduce merge mode signalling overhead. The current VTM has 5 merge modes. Regular merge mode is signalled first among the merge modes and each mode except the regular merge mode has conditions to be enabled. In the proposed method, if all of modes that follows a certain mode cannot be enabled, the signalling for the certain mode is not parsed. The proposed method can be applied to ciip_flag, merge_subblock_flag, mmvd_merge_flag and/or regular_merge_flag. The proposed method was tested under the common test conditions with triangle merge mode disabled. Test 1 that utilizes the proposed method on ciip_flag and merge_subblock_flag reportedly shows -0.19%/-0.18%/-0.17% (Y/U/V) average BD-rate change with RA configurations and -0.19%/-0.17%/-0.08% (Y/U/V) average BD-rate change with LDB configurations. Test 2 that utilizes the proposed method on ciip_flag, merge_subblock_flag and mmvd_merge_flag reports -0.20%/-0.22%/-0.20% (Y/U/V) average BD-rate change with RA configurations and -0.22%/-0.32%/-0.36% (Y/U/V) average BD-rate change with LDB configurations.
