AHG8: Adaptive Resolution Change (ARC) with downsampling
Abstract
This contribution relates to Adaptive Resolution Change (ARC). The contribution asserts that several of the use-cases for ARC involves downsampling and it is suggested to use filters with low-pass characteristics for the cases where a reference picture is of higher resolution than the current picture. For the one-step approach of ARC this would mean to use a different interpolation filter in the Motion Compensation process. For the two-step approach of ARC (where a new reference picture is created from a reference picture with different resolution) it would mean to generate a downsampled reference picture using filters adjusted for downsampling. The contribution includes two suggested sets of interpolation filters: one for 2:1 scaling and one for 4:1 scaling. Both are integer versions of 8-tap Lanczos filters. In the second version of the proposal, an example with 2x scaling factor is added as Annex B, and an example of 4x scaling factor using the SHVC 12-tap filter is added as Annex C for reference.
