Non-CE9: Simplification of DMVR and BDOF combination
Abstract
In the VVC draft 4, decoder side motion vector refinement and bi-directional optical flow are sequentially applied to a merge-coded CU when conditions for applying DMVR and applying BDOF are both met. In this contribution, two modifications to the DMVR + BDOF combination are proposed. In the first modification, it is proposed to disable the combination of DMVR and BDOF for some CU shapes, and to apply only BDOF to these CUs. For the other CUs, the same process as VVC draft 4 is performed. The simulation results show that 0.03% BD rate loss is observed in random access configuration. In the second modification, the merge candidate list is extended to allow some merge candidate indices to be used to select between DMVR and BDOF. The simulation results show that 0.45% BD rate loss is observed in random access configuration.
