AHG16/Non-CE3: Simplification on Intra sub-partition coding mode
Abstract
Intra sub-partition (ISP) coding mode can result into 1xN (N>=16) or 2xM (M>=8) sub-partitions. These shapes can lead to inefficient memory access. This contribution provides two alternative restrictions. The first alternative prohibits the partitions that could result into 1xN and 2xM sub-partitions. The second alternative prohibits only the partitions that could result into 1xN sub-partitions. The two restrictions makes memory access more efficient for processing ISP sub-partitions. Compared to VTM4.0 with all intra configuration, the first alternative brings 0.13% coding loss and the encoding and decoding time is reduced to 99%. The second alternative has a 0.03% coding loss and the encoding time is reduced to 99%.
