JVET-N0137 CE3-2.1: Intra chroma partitioning and prediction [T. Zhou, T. Ikai (Sharp)]
This contribution proposes partitioning and prediction modifications to alleviate intra chroma throughput issues. This report shows the following two tests:
Test 1(CE3-2.1.1): 2x2/2x4/4x2 restriction.
Test 2(CE3-2.1.2): CE-3.2.1.1 + DC mode only prediction in small chroma block.
The restriction size is 2x2, 4x2 and 2x4 in all cases.
In Test 1, intra chroma block partitioning in chroma dual tree chroma is restricted to address the longer intra processing pipeline in dual tree cases. Specifically, in this proposal, QT and MTT partitioning for small chroma blocks are disallowed in dual tree as a partition restriction.
In Test 2, DC mode only prediction in small chroma block is proposed to address difficulties in software cases.
- Test 1(CE3-2.1.1): the overall BD-rate loss is 0.02%/0.37%/0.49% in IO, 0.01%/0.30%/0.36% in RA, 0.00%/0.18%/ 0.15% in LB.
- Test 2(CE3-2.1.2): the overall BD-rate loss is 0.02%/0.37%/0.49% in IO, 0.10%/0.61%/0.40% in RA, 0.07%/0.66%/ 0.53% in LB.
