In this contribution, a modification of intra mode coding for combined inter and intra prediction (CIIP) is proposed. In the current CIIP scheme, most probable mode (MPM) mechanism is used to predict the intra modes of CIIP. In this contribution, we propose to remove the MPM mechanism for the intra mode coding of CIIP. Instead, the truncated unary codewords are used for the 4 intra modes of CIIP. The results reportedly show that the proposed simplification incurs 0.00% and 0.02% BD-rate increase for RA and LDB, respectively.
