CE14: Reduced latency, LUT-free bilateral filter
Abstract
This contribution proposes a modified version of the bilateral filter from JVET-K0274. The main modification is a replacement of the look-up table in JVET-K0247 by a clipped line. This way, it is asserted, no look-up table is used on a per-sample basis. The contribution claims that this reduces the latency introduced by the filter by 21% in the inter case and 9% in the intra case compared to JVET-K0274, according to a clock cycle model described in the paper. Furthermore, 4×4 blocks are not filtered, and the contribution claims that this helps hardware implementation considerations further. The BD-rate figures for an implementation in BMS-2.0.1 running in VTM configuration are reported to be -0.39% / -0.67% / -0.64% for AI/RA/LD respectively. The associated decoder run times are reported to be 104% / 102% / 103%.
