CE4-related: Merge mode with Regression based Motion Vector Field (RMVF)
Abstract
This contribution proposes Regression based Motion Vector Field (RMVF) to improve motion vector derivation for merge mode in VTM-2.0.1. The proposed tool attempts to model motion behavior of a block using motion vectors of the neighboring blocks by a linear model. RMVF tool is used as new merge mode in the VTM-2.0.1 software. When the mode is selected, motion vectors area generated using the linear model for 8×8 sub-blocks in order to provide sub-PU level motion granularity. The proposed method provides on average -0.70%, -0.10% and -0.28% Luma BD-Rate impact in RA, LDB, and LDP configurations, respectively. The encoding runtimes of 105%, 109% and 110% and decoding runtimes of 103%, 101% and 98% in RA, LDB, and LDP configurations were observed, respectively. Similar gains have been observed in Chroma BD-Rates.
