CE10.2.1: OBMC
Abstract
This contribution presents proposed complexity reduction methods for overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC). To reduce computational complexity, lossless data reuse, coding unit (CU) boundary only OBMC, removal of OBMC syntax, and disabling OBMC for small and large CUs are proposed. To remove all the additional motion compensation (MC) bandwidth, replacing additional reference samples required by the JEM OBMC with padded reference samples is proposed. To save the line buffer requirement, decreasing the number of blended lines from 4 to 2 at CTU row boundaries is proposed. To allow parallel processing for top and left boundaries of a CU, a parallel blending method is proposed. It is reported that OBMC with all the proposed complexity reduction methods results in -0.82% and -1.17% luma BD-rates with 2% and 3% encoding time increases and 8% and 9% decoding time increases for VTM2.0.1-RA and VTM2.0.1-LB, respectively.
