This contribution proposes to share the same merge list for all leaf coding units (CUs) of one ancestor node in the CU split tree for enabling parallel processing of merge mode for small CUs. The ancestor node is named merge sharing node. The shared merge list is generated at the merge sharing node pretending the merge sharing node is a leaf CU. When the proposed method is applied to VTM2.0.1, luma BD-rates are 0.09% and 0.06% for RA and LB, respectively. It is claimed that the shared merge list can effectively reduce difficulty for real-time 8K hardware decoding.
