CE4.2.3: Affine merge mode
Abstract
This contribution proposes to add affine merge candidates in a unified merge list. The affine merge candidates include spatial inherited affine candidates and constructed affine candidates. The spatial inherited affine candidates are inherited from neighboring blocks and reuse neighboring blocks’ affine model, and the constructed affine candidates use neighboring motion vectors (MVs) as control point MVs to derive affine model. A method to reduce the line buffer requirement for affine merge mode is also added to this proposal. Only one MV row above the current CU is used for deriving affine candidates when the top boundary of the current CU is also a CTU boundary. It is reported that this proposal achieves -0.17% and -0.26% luma BD-rates with +1% and +1% encoding time changes and +7% and +5% decoding time changes for RA and LB, respectively, compared against VTM2.0.1. When compared against the affine merge common base, this proposal reportedly achieves +0.58% and +0.17% luma BD-rates with -5% and -6% encoding time changes for RA and LB, respectively, and it is asserted that decoding time changes are negligible.
