CE9.5.3: Bi-directional optical flow (BIO) simplification
Abstract
This document reports the results of Core Experiment (CE) 9.5.3 on complexity reduction of bi-directional optical flow (BIO). In this CE test, the existing BIO design in the joint exploration model (JEM)-7.0 is used as the base. Additionally, one two-stage early termination method is used to conditionally disable the BIO based on the similarity between two bi-prediction signals at both CU and sub-CU levels. Simulation results show that compared to VTM-1.0 anchors, the proposed BIO method provides on average {Y, U, V} BD-rate savings of {2.61%, 1.02%, 0.74%} for RA with average encoding and decoding time of 111% and 137%.
