CE2.3.1: SAO with EO sign constraints removal and more EO patterns
Abstract
This contribution presents the test results of Core Experiment 2.3.1 (CE2.3.1), including edge offset (EO) sign constraints removal and more EO patterns. Removing EO sign constraints means signaling EO signs instead of using pre-defined signs as regulated in HEVC, and it achieves 0.00%, -0.04%, and -0.17% luma BD-rates for AI, RA, and LB on VTM-1.0. On BMS-1.0, 0.00%, 0.02%, and -0.07% luma BD-rates are achieved for AI, RA, and LB, respectively. Compared to VTM-1.0 with sample adaptive offset (SAO) off, SAO with EO sign constraints removal achieves -0.44%, -1.34%, and -1.29% luma BD-rates with 6%, 5%, and 2% decoding time increases, for VTM-AI, VTM-RA, and VTM-LB, respectively. Compared to BMS-1.0 with SAO off, it achieves -0.13%, -0.57%, and -1.16% luma BD-rates with 3%, 2%, and 2% decoding time increases, for BMS-AI, BMS-RA, and BMS-LB, respectively. SAO with removing EO sign constraints and adding three more EO patterns can achieve -0.48%, -1.42%, and -1.27% luma BD-rates with 6%, 4%, and 3% decoding time increases, for VTM-AI, VTM-RA, and VTM-LB, respectively, compared to VTM-1.0 with SAO off. Compared to BMS-1.0 with SAO off, it can achieve -0.16%, -0.63%, and -1.23% luma BD-rates, with 3%, 1%, and 2% decoding time increases, for BMS-AI, BMS-RA, and BMS-LB, respectively. There is no noticeable encoding time increase in VTM-1.0 and BTM-1.0.
