CE4-related: On performance improvements of Enhanced Interpolation Filter (EIF)
Abstract
In this proposal the analysis of Enhanced Interpolation Filter (EIF) in inter prediction is provided with the further improvement. EIF was initially proposed in JVET-J0024 and further studied in JVET-K020. Currently studied version of EIF use 3-tap high-pass filter (EIF3) and proposed as a solution for complexity reduction and worst case memory bandwidth reduction raised in JVET-J0081 for sub-block size 4x4. EIF3 allow to achieves -0.25%/-0.41% of luma BD-rate in RA/LDB with complexity reduction by 4% (Enc) and 9% (Dec) for the VTM configuration (96%(Enc) 91%(Dec) in RA and 94%(Enc) 94%(Dec) in LDB). Further improvements of EIF3 is proposed in this document as the same approach but in half-pixel domain with 5-tap high-pass filter (EIF5). Proposed filters design allows full PU size processing which allows to avoid increasing of memory bandwidth in worst case scenario. The design is friendly for parallel implementation. EIF5 allow to achieve -0.53%/-0.32 of luma BD-rate in RA/LDB with low influence on complexity for the VTM configuration with BMS Affine in anchor (98%(Enc) 100%(Dec) in RA and 103%(Enc) 97%(Dec) in LDB) and -0.15%/-0.07 of luma BD-rate in RA/LDB with low influence on complexity for the BMS configuration (102%(Enc) 101%(Dec) in RA and 104%(Enc) 100%(Dec) in LDB).
JVET-K0193 CE4-related: On performance improvements of Enhanced Interpolation Filter (EIF) [M. Sychev, G. Zhulikov, T. Solovyev, H. Chen, J. Chen (Huawei)] [late]

It is reported that the coding artefacts along a sharp edge in case of rotation could be alleviated by the per-pixel affine MC using EIF interpolation filter.

Combined with other techniques in affine MC, at maximum 0.7% coding gain could be obtained for VTM tool test in RA configuration.

It was commented that EIF may have interdependencies with OBMC and ALF in terms of coding gain.
