EE2-3.1a/b/c: Dead-Zone Adjustments and Unbiasing of Scalar Quantizers
Abstract
This document reports the simulation results of the EE2 tests 3.1a, 3.1b and 3.1c on dead-zone adjustments and unbiasing for scalar quantization with the Uniform Reconstruction Quantizer (URQ) and the Rate Distortion Optimized Quantizer (RDOQ). Test 3.1a is an encoder-only test with adjustment of the URQ dead-zone parameter at encoder side. Test 3.1b applies the same adjustment in forward quantization and further performs unbiasing by applying a signaled offset to dequantized values, where the offset is determined according to the dead-zone parameter and replaces existing offset values in the Quantization Center Shift (QCS) method. In test 3.1c, a signaled offset is used to reconstruct values within the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) of RDOQ, and that offset is added to QCS offsets in the dequantization stage. Tests 3.1a and 3.1b are performed in non-CTC test conditions where Dependent Quantization (DQ), sign prediction, RDOQ and RDOQTS are disabled. Tests 3.1c is performed in non-CTC test conditions where DQ, sign prediction are off, and RDOQ is used along with Sign Data Hiding (SDH). The impact on coding efficiency and runtimes of the proposed method over ECM-19.1 in these non-CTC conditions are reportedly:
