JVET-AJ0157 Non-EE2: Template matching based jointly reordering for GPM split modes and partition indexes [C. Ma, X. Xiu, X. Wang (Kwai)]
In this contribution, it is proposed to jointly reorder GPM split modes and partition indexes with template matching methods. For each GPM partition, the prediction signal can be generated with regular inter mode, TM inter mode, or MMVD inter mode. The proposed method was implemented on top of ECM-14.0, and it is reported that the overall performance impact is {-0.11, -0.21, -0.22, 102.7%, 100.4%} in RA and {xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx, xxx} in LD.
The upload at the time of presentation (almost 2 weeks after document deadline) only had results for classes C and D. Whereas the presentation deck has complete results for RA (see above), having no good tradeoff, another result with fast encoder which has better tradeoff, but again incomplete. LB are still missing. Further study (not in EE).
Proponents asked again during the presentation of the EE description to be included. Two independent experts supported the inclusion. However, there were no results yet with the optimized encoder optimization, nor with LB.
No action was taken on this.
