AHG12: Sharp motion compensation filter for bi-prediction
Abstract
This input contribution relates to motion compensation (MC) filters in ECM and proposes an additional luma filter to be used for bi-predicted blocks, while the existing MC filter is still used for uni-predicted blocks. No changes are proposed to chroma filters, affine filters or RPR filters. The proposed filter has slightly sharper filter properties compared to the existing MC filters, and it is asserted that this sharpness helps compensate for the additional filtering that occurs during bi-prediction. The proposed change gives an average BD-Rate(PSNR-Y/U/V) impact of -0.07%/-0.03%/-0.05% for RA and -0.07%/-0.21%/-0.39% for LDB. There is no impact on LDP since uni-prediction is not changed. No impact on encoding time and decoding time is expected. In the second version of this document, results for BQTerrace LDB QP 22 were added.
