JVET-AG0316 Update on Technical Report “Film grain synthesis technology for video applications” [A. Norkin (Netflix)] late]

This document informs JVET that AOMedia has finalized the AFGS1 specification, which is referenced by the Draft Technical Report “Film grain synthesis technology for video applications”. The document also includes information on what TR editors may consider updating in the TR, if possible.

It is reported that some modifications have been made in the latest version of AFGS1, and as a consequence it is suggested to implement an update in the TR.As AFGS1 has been finalized, it is believed that one of the main concerns of ISO editors has been resolved. There was also a comment that it is only accessible via a github link, which should however be less critical if the document is stable. This could be achieved if a specific version is referenced.

New version (draft 6) of the technical report to be issued.

The newly added subclause (7.4.2.7) describes a feature of the latest version of AFGS1 that is not supported by the AV1 version. This may be in conflict with another statement in 9.3 of the TR, that it would be equivalent with the implementation in AV1.

There are also changes in naming syntax elements, which should not be critical.

It was agreed to include the new subclause, and potentially remove it if there are complaints by ISO editors.
